The JoeMiguel Academy has become home to many Certified Curl Artists who have committed to “Redefining the Standard of Beauty” for all hair types. Founder and Educator, JoeMiguel Ortiz, launched The JoeMiguel Academy in June 2019 after several years of earning the nickname, “El Rey de Los Rizos,” coined by the curly hair community.
JoeMiguel has assembled a team of Curl Enthusiasts at his two salon locations, offering a variety of talents and skills serving clients of all hair textures. We strive to educate our clients and staff with the latest hair care products and techniques to ensure that each client’s hair is as healthy as it can be specific to their hair’s needs.
JoeMiguel’s passion for naturally curly hair was born several years ago after one of his regular clients completely changed his perspective on the health of her natural hair. She told JoeMiguel, “I’m going natural” and decided she would no longer come in for her routine of roller sets, relaxers, and doobie services to eliminate further heat and chemical damage. Instead, she opted for a “Big Chop” to begin her fresh, natural hair transition. JoeMiguel realized that most of his clientele were sacrificing the health of their natural hair, for a look that they felt was the more beautiful and tamer version of their hair rather than embracing each unique curl. El Rey de Los Rizos changed the dynamic of his salons and began to educate clients on proper hair cleansing and hydration needs, styling techniques, product application, and completes his service with a finalized look that provides uniform shape, volume, and curl definition, which is a look that has redefined the “Standard of Beauty” in society and in cosmetology education.
